WAKEFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 9) - Senior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the Hockey East office on Monday. Shain stopped 56 of the 59 shots that she faced over two games on the weekend, including 40 of 43 at No. 3 Minnesota, the two-time defending NCAA champions, on Friday evening.
UConn fell to Minnesota, 3-0, but rebounded on Saturday to take an exhibition game against the University of Alberta, 3-1. Shain played all 60 minutes of action against Minnesota and saved all 16 shots that she faced in two periods of play against Alberta. After a phenomenal junior season in 2004-05, Shain holds three career and season goaltending records at UConn, including the most wins by a goalie in program history. This was the third Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career.
The Huskies will open Hockey East play when they host defending champion Providence on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Freitas Ice Forum. The puck will drop at 2:00 p.m.
