Graczyk's Five-Point Effort Leads to UConn Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 22) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team collected its first conference victory of the season with a 3-1 defeat of Providence College on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies were led by senior forward Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, N.M.) who assisted on the first goal of the game and scored the next two to move UConn to 4-4-0 on the year.
Connecticut jumped to an early lead, scoring just 12:57 into the contest. Senior midfielder Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, Wash.) found the back of the net off a pass by Graczyk. The goal was Jalalian's first of the year and sixth of her career. The Friars responded to tie the score at 1-1 just minutes later with Veronica Bakke scoring the only goal for Providence at 19:40.
Goalkeeper Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.) and the UConn defense shut down the Friars after they tied the game as Graczyk gave the Huskies the lead in the second half. Graczyk's two goals were scored just under nine minutes apart and sealed the 3-1 win. Junior Kathleen Frank (Lansing, Mich.) registering her first point of the season with an assist on Graczyk's second goal.
With her five-point effort, Graczyk increased her season point total to 12 with four goals and four assists. She now ranks sixth all-time in points with 124 and her 49 career goals is tied for third-highest in school history.
The Huskies will next face Rutgers at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. The game is the first of a doubleheader, with UConn men's soccer taking on Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. With the two games, Connecticut is looking to shatter the BIG EAST soccer game attendance record of 6,070.
