Gjertsen's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Over Oregon

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 19) – Senior forward Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta) scored the only goal of the game as the Huskies topped Oregon, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. UConn improved to 3-4-0 on the season as Oregon dropped to 1-3-2.
At the 23:57 mark, the Huskies made a charge toward the Duck net. Junior Dominique Diadoo (Burnsville, Minn.) passed the ball to Gjertsen, who then shot it over a downed Oregon keeper into the lower left corner of the net. The goal was Gjertsen’s second of the season and the assist marked Diadoo’s first of the year.
Oregon had quality scoring opportunities in the game, but Husky goalkeeper Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.) had a stellar day in net to keep the Ducks off the board. Jessee collected her second-consecutive game with six saves.
The Huskies out-shot the Ducks 14-11, and registered nine shots on goal by seven different players. Oregon had eight fouls to UConn’s four.
Connecticut women’s soccer will next face conference foe Providence in Rhode Island Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
