AUSTIN, TX (June 11) - Senior Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) earned her fourth All-America honor and first-ever outdoors, finishing sixth in the high jump at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas on Friday evening.
Mullen recorded a final height of 1.84 meters (6-0.5) to finish among the top eight competitors and earn the fourth All-America title. Mullen is only the second athlete ever in the UConn women's program to earn the status four times, along with 2001 graduate Tamika Toppin, and will have a chance to be the first to earn a fifth when she competes outdoors in 2005 after not competing in 2003. Toppin also earned her four titles in the high jump.
The sixth-place finish for Mullen also earned UConn three points in the meet. The high jump event was won by Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech who cleared 1.93 meters (6-4).
Senior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, Conn.) competed in the discus throw earlier in the day, but fell short of her personal best and finished in 26th place with a mark of 48.43 meters (158-11). The NCAA Championship appearance caps off a successful final season for Parkosewich, in which she earned a BIG EAST title in the discus, set a new school record three times and placed second at the ECAC Championships.
