STORRS, CT (April 20) – Three home runs helped the University of Connecticut softball team hold off the Boston University Terriers to take a 10-6 victory on Tuesday afternoon. Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) knocked one over the fences to bring three runs home as part of a five-run sixth inning for the Huskies.
UConn took a 5-0 lead before the Terriers scored their first run. Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) scored on an error in the bottom of the second, and Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) led off the third inning with a solo home run to center field. Later in the same inning, Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) brought Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) home on a RBI single.
Jen Ward’s (Gales Ferry, Conn.) two RBI home run in the fourth inning put the Huskies up 5-0, and marked Ward’s first home run of the season.
The Terriers came up with a home run of their own in the top of the sixth inning, as Chiya Louie hit one over the right field fence with two runners on on base to put her team within two.
The Huskies then answered with five runs, including de Bary’s three RBI home run, a sacrifice fly by Campen, an a run by Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) which scored on an error.
The top of the seventh inning saw Boston University rally once again, taking advantage of UConn errors by scoring twice on one error and a third run on a wild pitch.
Freshman Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) took the win in the circle for UConn, striking out three batters en route to improving her season record to 3-1. DeKenya Williams recorded the loss for the Terriers, managing to strike out just one UConn batter.
Arbogast had a solid day going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Schettini finished 2-for-4 and Ward went 1-for-2 with two RBI on the home run. Erica Pernell (Plainville, Conn.) knocked out her first double of the season in her only at bat of the game.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday, April 21 when they play host to UMass in a single game at 4:30 p.m.
