NEW BRITAIN, CT (April 16) – Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, MA) and Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, PA) combined for a no-hitter as the University of Connecticut softball team defeated Central Connecticut State 11-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Huskies (16-16) then took a 2-0 win in the nightcap to sweep the Blue Devils (6-26).
UConn dominated in game one, out-hitting CCSU 15-0. Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) got the first run on the board in the second inning when she hit a double to centerfield and then advanced to third and home on an error.
The Huskies scored five runs on six hits in the next inning, scoring the first on a RBI single by Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) with the bases loaded, and two more on de Bary’s second double of the game, again with bases loaded. UConn then took a 6-0 lead after Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) knocked out a two RBI double. Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.), Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) and Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) all recorded base hits in the inning.
Arbogast hit a second RBI single in the fourth to score Campen who had reached on a double.
Quan blasted a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning to give UConn a 10-0 lead, and a RBI single by Schettini was the 11th and final run for the Huskies, who run-ruled the Blue Devils in five innings.
Gurney struck out four batters and walked none as well as recording zero hit by pitches to complete a perfect three innings of work. Caouette fanned two batters and walked only one in two innings to record the save.
Quan finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and de Bary went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.
UConn didn’t find the same offensive power in game two, but found enough to prevail 2-0 over CCSU. Nikki Ribeiro (Norton, Mass.) took a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run in the top of the second, and the Huskies added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Quan singled to shortstop to score Ribeiro who had reached on a single.
Schettini, de Bary, DiBiase and Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) all tallied base hits in the second game as UConn out-hit CCSU six to three. Freshman Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) took the win, striking out three batters and walking one in four innings, while Caouette recorded her second save of the day and the season by striking out five and giving up just one hit in the final three innings.
Kristin Kropp recorded two of CCSU’s three hits in the second game, and Heather Mills tallied the third.
UConn returns to action with two BIG EAST doubleheaders on the road, first taking on Rutgers at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, and then traveling to Villanova on Sunday for another noon doubleheader.
