UConn Swept by Boston College in BIG EAST Doubleheader

STORRS, CT (April 10) – Boston College hit four home runs en route to a sweep of the University of Connecticut softball team in a BIG EAST doubleheader. The Huskies battled in game one, but eventually lost 7-5, while game two was a 6-0 shutout by Boston College.
UConn saw solid scoring chances in their first at bat of game one, as junior Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) doubled to lead off the inning, and freshman Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) followed with a bunt single. After a ground out, an error loaded the bases for UConn, but Boston College made the play at home on a fielder’s choice and a ground out followed to end the chances for the Huskies.
The Eagles’ Lisa Field and Erin Mackey both hit RBI singles in the top of the second to give Boston College a 2-0 lead, and Jacqui Goodchild hit a home run for the Eagles with one runner on base in the top of the third to make the lead 4-0.
UConn scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to narrow the lead to two, with juniors Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) and Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) both recording RBI singles. Boston College widened the lead in the fourth inning, scoring one run on an error, one on a RBI double from Jenna Macchi and a third run on a sacrifice fly.
Once again the Huskies battled, coming up with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, Conn.) scored on an error after reaching on a base hit, and senior Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) drove in another run with a single up the middle to put the Huskies within three with a score of 7-4.
Arbogast struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right field to bring home Ward, but it was the last run of the game, leaving UConn two short despite out-hitting the Eagles 11-7.
The Huskies knocked out five hits in game two, but failed to score a single run. Boston College’s Britney Thompson homered in the fourth inning to put the Eagles up 2-0, and Macchi homered in the fifth inning with two runners on base. Boston College added a sixth run when Michelle Daly hit the team’s fourth home run of the day in the top of the seventh inning.
Daly also took the win and the shutout for the Eagles in the circle, striking out three batters and walking none. Thompson took the win in the first game for Boston College, while Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) and Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, N.Y.) each recorded a loss for UConn.
The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, April 13 when they travel to Massachusetts for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
