Huskies Win One of Three Matches Over the Weekend

STORRS, CT - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team played three tough matches over the weekend, coming out with one win and two losses. The Huskies defeated UMBC 4-3, and lost to Rutgers 5-2 as well as to Army by a score of 6-1. UConn's season record now stands at 1-4.
In UConn's first match of the weekend at home against Rutgers, played in East Hartford, junior Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) had a successful day with wins in both singles and doubles. She defeated her opponent at No. 2 singles in three sets, and teamed with freshman Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) for an 8-3 win in No. 3 doubles. Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) also took a win in singles at the No. 3 spot in straight sets.
The Huskies pulled out a tough win in their second match of the weekend against UMBC at Army. The Retrievers won the doubles point with wins in two of three matches, but UConn took four of six singles matches to win overall. LoRusso won at the No. 2 spot, Schumsky took a win at the No. 3 spot, Burek won in the No. 5 position and freshman Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) won at the No. 6 position.
In their final match of the weekend, UConn took the doubles point at Army with wins in two of three matches, but lost all six singles matches to the Black Knights. LoRusso and Schumsky teamed up in the No. 2 doubles spot and won 8-4, and Burek teamed with Petruzzi for an 8-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
