Shannon Murphy Named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week

WAKEFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 22) - University of Connecticut goaltender Shannon Murphy (Burrillville, R.I.) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 22 as announced by the Hockey East Conference on Monday. The recognition marks Murphy's third weekly conference honor this season and the fifth honor for UConn.
Murphy had to solid performances between the pipes in Connecticut's two ties with Minnesota State on Nov. 19 and 20 in Mankato, Minn. She made 32 saves on Friday and 29 on Saturday to improve her record to 4-1-3. The ties also lifted Murphy's undefeated streak to a school record seven games, during which she has lowered her goals against average to 1.50 while posting a .925 save percentage.
The Huskies begin a difficult stretch of their 2004-05 schedule this weekend when they travel to New Jersey for a two-game series against No. 8 Princeton Nov. 27-28. Both games begin at 1:00 p.m. Connecticut will then go to Durham, N.H. on Dec. 4 for a single game against No. 7 New Hampshire. The Huskies conclude the first half of their season with a Wednesday, Dec. 8 game vs. No. 4 Harvard at Freitas Ice Fourm.
