Owens, Murphy Selected for Hockey East Weekly Honors

WAKEFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 1) - Senior Tiffany Owens (Novi, Mich.) was named Player of the Week while fellow senior Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, R.I.) was selected as Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the Hockey East Conference on Monday, Nov. 1. It is the first conference honor of the season for both players, and the third UConn recognition of the season (Jaclyn Hawkins - Oct. 18 Rookie of the Week). For the weekend UConn registered its first two victories of the season, defeating Quinnipiac 2-1 (Oct. 29) and Yale 2-1 (Oct. 31) to win the Nutmeg Classic.
Owens led the Huskies in scoring this weekend. The forward tallied a goal and an assist in leading UConn to a 2-1 win at Quinnipiac. She then scored the game-tying goal at Yale as the Huskies rallied to beat the Bulldogs 2-1. Owens leads the team in points with six (four goals, two assists).
Murphy earned the Laurie Beliveau Award for her stellar play in the Nutmeg Classic. The goalie stopped 55 of 57 shots faced to register a .965 save percentage in the two games. Murphy improved to 2-1-0 this season and lowered her GAA to 2.68. For her efforts in the Nutmeg Classic, Murphy was also named Honorable Mention Defensive Player of the Week by US College Hockey Online.
Connecticut will return to Hockey East action this weekend, with a home-and-home series against Boston College. Friday, Nov. 5, the Huskies will travel to Newton, Mass., to face the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. UConn will then return the Freitas Ice Forum on Sunday, Nov. 7 to conclude the series with a 2:00 p.m. game.
