STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 3) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team came back from a rough first half to top BIG EAST opponent Georgetown by a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. With the win, the Huskies moved to 7-5-0 on the season with a 4-2-0 record in conference play. UConn has also won five of its last six games. The loss was Georgetown's first this season in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas are now 2-1-0 against league opponents and 5-5-0 overall.
Georgetown wasted no time on the offensive attack, scoring just 4:38 into the game. The Hoyas were awarded a free kick, on which Karen Waskewich connected with Alexandra Hardy. Hardy found the back of the net on a diving header to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead, where the score would stand going into the half.
UConn came out on the counterattack entering the second half. At 46:39, senior forward Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, N.M.) kicked the ball up the field to a streaking Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta) who directed the ball in goal to knot the score at 1-1. Just 1:09 later, UConn took the lead on a goal by sophomore Niki Cross (Pembroke, Mass.). Junior Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, Conn.) fed the ball off a free kick to Cross, who headed it in for her third goal of the season.
The third Connecticut goal came at 79:32. Graczyk found a sprinting Gjertsen again up the field, who launched the ball in for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to give the Huskies the 3-1 victory.
UConn will play its next two games on the road, at Syracuse on Oct. 8 then at Seton Hall on Oct. 10. The Huskies return to Morrone Stadium Oct. 13 against Brown at 5:00 p.m.
