Mens Soccer Bests Syracuse, 3-2

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 27) – The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team (8-6-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) edged Syracuse (4-11-0, 2-6-0 BIG EAST), 3-2, in the Huskies’ final home match of the 2004 regular season Wednesday evening at Morrone Stadium.
Freshman Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) gave UConn an early 1-0 lead at 5:44 as he headed a shot into the back of the net from the center of the box off a feed from juniors Drew Brown (Middletown, Conn.) and Willis Forko (Houston, Texas).
Then the Huskies quickly added a second tally just over six minutes later on sophomore Kevin Burns’ (Greenfield, Ind.) second of the season from freshman Bonginkosi Macala (Pretoria, South Africa) as Macala now leads UConn scorers with 12 points on the year.
The Orange rallied, however, cutting the Connecticut lead to one at 26:55 as Jeff Evans scored, unassisted then netted the equalizer at 42:47 off a corner kick from Isaac Collings, tying the score at 2-2.
Macala put UConn back on top, with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, from seniors William Osorio (Miami, Fla.) and Joe Coyle (Belle Meade, N.J.) at 59:12.
With just over three minutes remaining, Connecticut junior Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, Wis.) turned aside a quality shot by Alejandro Nuno to preserve the victory. Schuerman made two stops to record his sixth win of the year. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Huskies, while corner kicks were 4-3, Syracuse.
Connecticut next travels to face Notre Dame on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
