STORRS, CT (September 28) -- Falling behind BIG EAST Northeast Division foe Virginia Tech 2-0 at the 19:26, The University of Connecticut women’s soccer team, led by freshman Meghan Schnur (Butler, PA) battled back to take the lead early in the second half and went on to win a 5-3 decision in Blacksburg, VA Sunday afternoon. With the victory, UConn improves to 5-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. The Hokies slip to 5-4-0, 1-2-0.
With Tech enjoying a 2-0 advantage and the first half winding down, Schnur took over. At 40:50, Schnur took a feed from Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta) and cut the Hokie lead in half with a goal past reigning BIG EAST Goaltender of the Week, Mallory Soldner. The tally apparently gave the Huskies a wave of momentum that they would ride into the second half.
Just 1:50 into the second stanza, junior Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, WA) scored the game-tying goal off an assist from Schnur at 46:50. The Connecticut onslaught continued as junior Preseason All BIG-EAST selection Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) found the back of the net for the fourth time in 2003 thanks to Schnur’s second assist of the day at 47:27. Graczyk would add the eventual game-winner at 59:28 off another assist from Gjertsen. The Huskies’ fifth goal of the day came off the foot of Gjertsen as she lit the lamp for the ninth time this season.
The Huskies out-shot Tech 21-16 on the afternoon, including 13-8 in the second half when the UConn offense kicked it into high-gear. Erin Rice (Keller, TX) made four saves and allowed two goals in over 75 minutes of action. Megan Jesse (Orefield, PA) saw 14:41 in net for the Huskies and made two saves. Soldner stopped five shots for Virginia Tech.
UConn will resume its nomadic schedule stretch, and travel to Boston College on Friday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m.
