Morgantown, WV (September 27) – Lindon Pecorelli (LaCrescenta, CA) and Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, CA) each tallied their first goals of the season, but UConn could not hold on to a 2-0 lead as the Huskies played to a 2-2 tie Saturday night with West Virginia in Morgantown. The tie keeps UConn’s record at a level 3-3-2, 1-1-2 in the BIG EAST, and the Mountaineers now stand at 4-4-1, 1-2-1.
Pecorelli got things started for UConn at the 42:11 mark off an assist from Easton Wilson (Hartford, CT), giving the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. Arias scored UConn’s second goal of the evening thanks to a Pecorelli assist. West Virginia peppered Steve Behonick (Bohemia, NY) with shot after shot, out shooting UConn 25-to-10 on the night including 13-to-4 in the second stanza. Devon McTavish finally got West Virginia on the board just three minutes after Forko’s goal, cutting the Husky lead in half.
West Virginia’s Mehran Mostafavifar apparently has a flare for the dramatic as he scored the game-tying goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, giving the Mountaineer faithful 20 free minutes of soccer. However, neither team could manage another goal and the score ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Behonick made six saves for the Huskies, including one big save in the second overtime period. Adam Shutler made West Virginia’s lone save.
The Huskies are back in action Wednesday, October 1 when they take on Yale in Storrs. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
