Malone, Butler Earn BIG EAST Accolades

STORRS, CT (September 22) – Senior forward Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) has been honored as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, and senior goaltender Maureen Butler has been named BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Week for their efforts in leading The University of Connecticut field hockey team to victory in its BIG EAST opener against Villanova on Saturday. Butler also garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of September 1.
Malone scored two goals in the Huskies’ victory over the Wildcats on Saturday, and also dished out an assist. Malone now has a BIG EAST leading nine goals and has registered 19 points in seven games this season. Butler earned her fifth shutout victory on Saturday, stopping all three shots she faced from the Villanova offense. Butler has made 33 saves this season and boasts a solid goals against average of .870.
UConn is back in action Wednesday to take on Ivy League foe Harvard at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
