FAIRFAX, VA (May 30) - Mike Deibler tied for third in the high jump to highlight the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team's competition on Friday at the first ever NCAA East Regional, held at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. This year marks the first time that the NCAA has gone to a regional format for track and field and the East region is by far the largest, encompassing 110 men’s and 112 women’s track and field teams from Maine to Florida.
Joe Mendel ran a 46.26 in the 400 meters to finish sixth overall out of 35 runners while Joel Legare’s 1:49.62 placed him eighth in the 800 meters out of 35 competitors. Both finishes qualify the runners for Saturday’s single-heat finals in those events. Runners placing in the top eight of their respective events advance to the regional final. Deibler cleared 7’1" in the high jump (2.16 meters) to land in a three-way tie for third place overall, equaling Matt Vincent of Florida and Jimmy Baxter of South Florida. With the top five finish, Deibler will advance to the NCAA Championships to be held on June 11-14 at Sacramento State.
The 400 and 800 meter finals will be contested on Saturday afternoon at George Mason along with several field events.
