Huskies Sweep Providence in Two Shutouts

STORRS, CT (April 30) – The University of Connecticut softball team took two shutout wins from Providence College on Wednesday at the UConn Softball Stadium. The Huskies improve to 23-21-1 overall and 11-5 in BIG EAST games with the pair of wins. Providence falls to 17-21 and 1-13 in the league.
Connecticut scored the only run of game one in the third inning. Nikki Ribeiro (Norton, MA) led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced as Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) grounded out. Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) got on base with a bunt, pushing Ribeiro over to third. Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) flied out to center field for the RBI to send in the only run in UConn's 1-0 win.
Cook earned the win for UConn, striking out eight batters to improve to 8-6. Cori Van Dusen suffered the loss, falling to 6-8 on the season.
UConn scored two runs in the fourth inning in game two. Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) scored, along with Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA), on a single by Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, CT). Ward added one more run in the sixth inning, with a single homer to left field. The Huskies took game two, 3-0.
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took the win, improving to 11-8 as Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, NY) relieved her in the sixth inning and earned her third save of the season. Nicole Bartholomew went home with the loss, but struck out eight.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, May 3 when they travel to Seton Hall for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
