Huskies Split With Quinnipiac

STORRS, CT (April 3) – The University of Connecticut softball team split a pair of games with non-conference opponent Quinnipiac on Thursday, April 3 at the UConn Softball Stadium. The Huskies are now at 11-13-1 overall as Quinnipiac stands at 16-7.
The two teams battled into extra innings in game one, with the Bobcats scoring in the extra inning to win, 2-1. UConn scored the first run in the bottom of the fourth as Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) started the inning off with a walk. She advanced on a single by Kim Castner (Forked River, NJ) and scored on Bethany Watrous’ (Worcester, MA) single to center. Quinnipiac evened the score in their very next at-bat. Elizabeth Moriarty kicked off the fifth with a triple to right field and scored on Ashley Morgan’s single to shortstop.
Sara Blumenthal was placed on second for the Bobcats in the top of the eight and scored on Sarah Collins’ double to left field. UConn could not answer back in the bottom of the inning and dropped game one. Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, NY) suffered the loss, allowing just one run, as Melissa Reynolds recorded the win. Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) also pitched for the Huskies, striking out nine and allowing five hits.
Quinnipiac scored immediately in game two. With two outs, Jill Cimminello hit a triple to send in Collins, who had walked. Connecticut evened the score in the bottom half, as Barb Cook got on base with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball ad scored on Mandy Schettini’s (Coxsackie, NY) single to right field.
The Huskies added two more in the third inning to bring the score to 3-1 for the win. Cook walked again and scored on Schettini’s sacrifice fly to right field. Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC), who reached on an error, scored the second run on D’Angelo’s ground out to first base. Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took the win, striking out six in five innings of play. Alisha Zabel recorded the loss, giving up two hits and striking out two.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, April 5 when they play host to Yale for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
