STORRS, CT (April 21) – Sophomore Mandy Schettini went five-for-six and hit her first career home run as the University of Connecticut softball team swept a doubleheader from Villanova, 2-1 and 5-0, on Monday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field. The games were rescheduled from April 5 due to rain. With the two conference wins, the Huskies even their overall record on the year at 18-18-1 (6-4 BIG EAST) while the Wildcats drop to 20-11-1 (7-5 BIG EAST).
In the first game, UConn opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Pitcher Barb Cook drew a one-out walk and would eventually score on a double to left field by Schettini. The Wildcats roared back to tie the game in their next at bat when Lisa Krueger led off with a single and later scored on a Jessie Olownia single to center. The Huskies would win the game in their final turn at bat. Schettini led off the home half of the sixth with a ground single up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer D’Angelo, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Maggie Arbogast single to right field. Cook threw five innings, allowing one run on five singles with two walks and three strikeouts for the Huskies on the mound. Claire Hesson picked up the win in relief, throwing two shutout frames. Theresa Hornick picked up the loss for Villanova, allowing two runs on six hits over five and one third innings with five strikeouts against just one walk.
UConn wasted little time jumping on the Wildcats in the nightcap. After Shannon Williams retired the Huskies’ first two batters of the game, Schettini ripped her first career home run, a solo shot over the right center field fence. After D’Angelo drew a walk, Arbogast followed with her first career homer, a towering shot to right, to put UConn up 3-0. The two home runs doubled UConn’s output from its first 36 games of the year combined, with the Huskies’ only other tater on the year coming off of the bat of Kim Castner on April 19 at Boston College. The Huskies plated another pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Pinch runner Jennifer Ward scored from third base on a wild pitch and Bethany Watrous singled to right to plate Megan Enders with UConn’s fifth and final run of the game. Hesson threw her second solo shutout of the year to earn the win on the mound as the Huskies overcame six errors in the contest. Hesson allowed three hits and walked none while striking out seven Wildcat batters.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, April 23 when they travel to Amherst, Mass. to face UMass at 4:00 p.m. UConn recorded a thrilling, 1-0, victory over the Minutewomen last Tuesday in the bottom of the seventh inning.
