NEW HAVEN, CT (March 29) – The University of Connecticut softball team swept a doubleheader from Yale on Saturday, defeating the Elis 4-1 in 10 innings and 3-0 at Dewitt Family Field in New Haven. The wins improve the Huskies to 10-12-1 on the year while Yale slips to 6-16.
The opening game saw each team plate a run in the second inning and then not score again into extra innings. Finally, the Huskies broke through for three runs in the top of the 10th for the 4-1 win. Maggie Arbogast was the offensive star for UConn, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bethan Watrous drove in a pair of runs during UConn’s 10th inning rally while Kim Castner drove in UConn’s second inning run. Michelle Caouette earned the win on the mound, throwing six innings of two-hit shutout relief. Margaret Hunt was a tough-luck loser for the Elis, throwing all 10 innings, allowing just two earned runs and six hits while fanning four with no walks.
In the night cap, Claire Hesson threw her first solo shutout of the season, a three-hitter, to propel UConn to a 3-0 win. Mandy Schettini went a perfect 4-for-4 to help the Huskies, driving in a run. Suzy de Bary and Megan Enders picked up the other two UConn RBI.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday in Storrs when they open BIG EAST play with a noon doubleheader against Providence.
