Huskies Lead at New Englands After Day One

BOSTON, MA (February 28) - The University of Connecticut men’s track team completed day one of the New England Championship meet in first place with 73 points.
Joel Legare (Holden, MA) highlighted the first day for the Huskies with a first place finish in the 800 meter run. His time of 1:49.18 was a provisional national qualifying time and led UConn in seven first-place finishes on the day. Chris Mazza (Toms River, NJ) claimed the first place spot in the pole vault. Cody Kretschmer (Chester, NH) and Mike Boney (East Haven, CT) each claimed the number one spot in a pentathlon event, the 55 meter hurdles and shot put, respectively. Boney claimed the title in the pentathlon, as teammate Kretschmer took second and Chad Caldwell (Bayport, NY) finished in fourth. Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) grabbed another top finish in the high jump. Logan Jones (Dorchester, MA) finished in the lead in the preliminary rounds of the 500 meter.
The Huskies continue at the New England Championships on Saturday, March 1. Competition begins at 11:30 a.m.
