STORRS, CT (Dec. 30) - Freshman Trevor Stewart (Elk River, MN), a forward on the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team, was recently named the Atlantic Hockey Association Freshman of the Week. Stewart was chosen after his impressive play in UConn’s 4-4 tie with Bentley at the 2003 UConn Hockey Classic.
Stewart notched two points in the contest, first assisting on teammate Tim Olsen’s goal to help put UConn up 2-1, and later scoring a goal of his own to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead early in the third period. Stewart currently has five goals and five assists on the season for 10 points, which ranks him third on the team and first among the freshmen.
The results of the championship game of the Classic, which UConn advanced to after a 2-1 shootout victory over Bentley, were not factored into this week’s decision on AHA Players of the Week. The Huskies won the championship game with a 1-0 defeat of Air Force.
UConn will return to the ice on Friday, January 9 when they travel to AHA rival Holy Cross for a 7:00 p.m. game.
