WORCESTER, MA (Dec. 2) – Holy Cross scored two power play goals late in the third period to skate past the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team, 4-2 in an Atlantic Hockey contest on Tuesday night in the Hart Center Rink.
The loss drops the Huskies to 4-7-3 overall and 2-4-2 in AHA, while the Crusaders improved to a 9-4-1 overall, 8-1-1 in the league.
Holy Cross struck first, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Freshman James Sixsmith recorded his fifth goal of the season to take the 1-0 lead at 4:12. Greg Kealey and Jeff Dams assisted on the goal. The Crusaders second goal came at 14:53 in the first when Pierre Napert-Frenette got one past UConn goaltender Scott Tomes (Windham, NH).
The Huskies fought back to bring the score to 2-1 to close out the first period. Eric St. Arnauld (Marquette, MI) and Beau McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA) found Chris Uber (Ithaca, NY) in front of the goal at the 16:39 mark.
The line of St. Arnuald, McLaughin and Uber combined for the Huskies second goal, and the opener of the second period. This time, St. Arnauld found the back of the net with aid from line mates McLaughin and Uber.
The Crusaders controlled much of the third period, and capitalized on two power-play goals despite the Huskies’ out-shooting Holy Cross, 11-9. Blair Bartlett collected the game-winning goal and an assist on the final goal to lead the Crusaders to the 4-2 win. Napert-Frenette added his second goal of the night to complete the night’s scoring.
Tomes stopped 24 shots on net, while Tony Quesada recorded 29 saves in goal for the Crusaders. Despite the loss, Connecticut held the 31-28 advantage in shots.
Connecticut has the next two weeks off, but will resume its season on December 20 at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
