STORRS, CT (Nov. 7) -- Junior Angie Wallace (Mullett Lake, MI) scored the game-winning goal and freshman Leslie Hurlburt tallied her first career goal as the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team earned their second victory of the season with a 2-1 defeat of in-state rival Quinnipiac at the UConn Ice Arena. The Huskies move to 2-4-3 on the season with the win, while the Bobcats drop to 1-7.
UConn goalkeeper Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) made just 16 stops on the night, as the Huskies out-shot Quinnipiac 43-17. Catherine Lapare was strong in goal for the Bobcats with 41 saves in the contest.
Neither team was able to find the net in the first period, despite two power play opportunities for each squad. The night’s action happened entirely in period two, when Hurlburt got things started at the 6:27 mark with a backhanded goal off assists from Janelle Armitage (Kinsella, Alberta) and Jennifer Houlden (Richmond Hill, Ontario). The initial shot by Houlden was poked free near the net by Armitage and passed to Hurlburt who found the open space.
The Bobcats answered the goal later in the same period when Caitlin Peters found a clean shot on a breakaway with 6:37 remaining to knot the score at 1-1.
The Huskies tallied the game-winner not long after Quinnipiac’s goal, when Wallace deflected a shot into the net with just 2:56 remaining in the second period.
UConn returns to the ice on Saturday, November 15 when they host #2 Dartmouth at the UConn Ice Arena at 2:00 p.m.
