Huskies Earn Berth into 2003 NCAA Tournament

STORRS, CT (November 17) – The University of Connecticut men’s soccer team earned a berth in the 2003 NCAA College Cup Tournament Monday afternoon, announced by the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Selection Committee. UConn will face the University of Rhode Island in first round action on Saturday, November 22 at 1:00 pm at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies will be making their 24th overall tournament appearance and sixth consecutive berth. In 2002, the Huskies fell in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, a 3-0 loss at Maryland.
UConn’s record currently stands at 8-8-3 overall, and completed its BIG EAST schedule with a 5-3-2 record. The Huskies qualified for their ninth consecutive tournament appearances, 19th overall, dating back to 1982. UConn has made the most BIG EAST Tournament appearances, with Seton Hall close behind with 17 berths. Connecticut has missed only three BIG EAST Tournaments, from 1992-1994.
The Huskies are led by rookie All-BIG EAST Third Team selection Steve Sealy. He has started and played in all 19 games, scoring five goals and three assists for 13 points. Sophomore Adam Schuerman has been the mainstay in net for UConn, playing and starting in 16 games. He has allowed 18 goals for a 1.07 goals against average, recording 67 saves. His record of 8-6-2, includes six shutouts.
