STORRS, CT (Nov. 17) - The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team has announced their team captains for the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons. Two seniors and two juniors were picked by the team to lead the squad as they look to reach high levels of success with a talented group this year. Senior All-American Deirdre Mullen, senior Amy Parkosewich and juniors Caitlyn Brady and April Garner have all been named captains.
Mullen, a native of Princeton, NJ, earned her second All-America title in the high jump last season. She will help lead a strong group of jumpers in 2003-04. Mullen has established herself as one of the top high jumpers in the country, and is a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier.
Mullen won every meet she competed in last season with the exception of the USA Track & Field Championship meet, and claimed her second ECAC title as well as her first BIG EAST title. At the conclusion of the season, she was named the Northeast Region Women’s Athlete of the Year.
Parkosewich is an ECAC Champion and a school record-holder in the discus who hails from Bethlehem, CT. She will lead a group of throwers who are likely to be one of the strongest groups for the women’s team this season. As a junior, Parkosewich consistently earned top-10 finishes in both the shot put and weight throw during the indoor season, and performed exceptionally well in the hammer throw, shot put and discus during the outdoor season.
Brady, returns this season to help lead the jump squad, an area which she has proven herself a worthy competitor over the past two seasons. In 2002-03, Brady, a native of Englewood, CO, placed in the top 10 in the triple jump seven times during the indoor season, and placed fourth at the New England Championships with a career-best mark. Outdoors she earned 10th place in the same event at the BIG EAST Championship.
Garner, a native of Temple Hills, MD, is an ECAC finalist who will lead the sprints and hurdles group this season. The group has lost three of last year’s key members to graduation, and will rely on Garner for veteran leadership. She consistently placed in the top four in the 55-meter hurdles during the indoor season last year, running a career-best 8.06 seconds at the New England Championships to earn second place. In outdoor competition, Garner qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 100-meter hurdles, and placed 22nd in the event with a time of 14.19 seconds.
