STORRS, CT (October 9) – The Huskies had chance after chance but could not capitalize on any of them as the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team played to a scoreless deadlock with Hofstra Thursday evening at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. UConn’s record stands at 7-2-3 after the tie, and Hofstra is now 9-1-2 on the year.
UConn was dominant in this contest, out shooting the Pride 30-to-6 on the evening and holding a 13-to-2 advantage in shots on goal. However, time after time, Hofstra keeper Rebecca Wachsberger thwarted any Husky attempt, stopping a career-high 13 shots. Junior forward Jessica Gjertsen found herself being robbed more frequently than anyone. Gjertsen managed 11 shots and five shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. At 10:41 Gjertsen fired a shot from 15 yards out on the right side that looked destined to break the scoreless tie, but Wachsberger leaped and punched the ball over the crossbar and out of harms way.
Just one minute into the second session, junior Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) fed the ball into the top of the box, finding a cutting Gjertsen. Gjertsen took the ball out of midair and rifled a shot that slid barely over the crossbar, preserving the stalemate.
Connecticut’s final opportunity came in the game’s 109th minute. Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, CT) served a perfect ball into Graczyk who hit a header from seven yards out right at Wachsberger, as the UConn settled for its third tie of the season.
The Huskies are back in action Sunday October 12 when they take on UHart in Hartford. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
