BLACKSBURG, VA (October 8) – Glen Carnahan (Broomfield, CO) scored his first collegiate goal and the game-winner in the University of Connecticut men’s soccer teams 2-0 BIG EAST win over Virginia Tech at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. on Wednesday evening. The Huskies improve their record to 5-4-2 overall, 3-1-2 in the BIG EAST earning their third shutout of the season. The Hokies fall to 8-3-1 overall, 3-2-0 in the conference.
The first half of play, Virginia Tech dominated the game, out shooting Connecticut, 12-1.
The second half, Connecticut took control notching two goals in the last 12-minutes of play. Willis Forko (Houston, TX) served a ball into the goal box off a direct kick, allowing Hokie goalie Chase Harrison to knock it down, but not get a hold on it. A defenseman, Carnahan had moved in for the direct kick and pushed through getting a piece of the ball for the first score of the game in the 78th-minute. With 29-seconds left in regulation, Stanley Ford (Liverpool, NY) also notched his first collegiate goal to give the Huskies the cushioned lead for the victory on a breakaway. One of the Hokies best scoring chances came in the opening minutes of the second half. Bailey Allman took a hard shot into the top right corner of the net, but Connecticut keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) jumped up and grabbed the ball out of harm’s way.
Schuerman played strong in net, recording four saves, while Harrison stopped two UConn shots on goal.
Connecticut will travel to College Park, Maryland on Sunday, October 12 to take on the University of Maryland Terrapins at 1:00 pm.
