ATHENS, GA (Sept. 8) – For the second time this weekend, the University of Connecticut’s women’s soccer team fell behind early. But unlike their 3-2 loss to Florida, the Huskies were able to redeem themselves and send the two teams into overtime, pulling out the win in the second overtime period to improve their record to 3-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST as the Bulldogs fell to 1-3-0, 0-0-0 SEC.
Beth Culver put Georgia on the board first, shooting to the lower left corner on a pass from Geneil Newbern. Goal two came off a header from Tricia McKee on a corner kick play at the 36 minute mark. The Huskies put one on the board from Megan Almanzo (New Hope, MN), scoring her first goal of the season. Almanzo received a pass from Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM) and placed it top shelf past Ashley Lindley.
The second half went back and forth, with both teams producing scoring chances, and UConn maximizing to send the Huskies and Bulldogs into overtime. Freshman Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, VT) showed some skillful footwork, making her way past a number of Georgia defenders before tying the game at two.
The game went to two overtimes and Graczyk put in the game-winner off a header. The assist was credited to Salla Ranta (Helsinki, Finland).
The Huskies return home on Wednesday, September 11 to play host to the Villanova Wildcats at 3 p.m.
