Huskies Shutout Minutewomen

Amherst, Mass. (Sept. 28, 2002)-- The University of Connecticut field hockey team captured its fourth consecutive victory with a 5-0 shutout over the University of Massachusetts behind two goals and an assist by junior Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) on Saturday in Amherst, Mass. The Huskies even their record at 5-5 overall while the Minutewomen slip to 0-9 on the season.
Malone had a hand in all three goals in the first half and gave UConn the early lead scoring the game-winner just five minutes into the contest. She tallied her second goal of the day just five minutes later off a feed from sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) and senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead at the half when she scored at the 24:49 mark off a Malone assist.
UConn tacked on two more insurance goals in the second half when freshman Becky Helwig ( Madison, NJ) scored an unassisted goal at 36:59 and Henderson tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season when she took a pass from junior Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) and slipped the ball past UMass goaltender Ashley Egland.
UConn dominated the game outshooting the Minutewomen, 26-5. Butler finished with two saves on the afternoon to earn her first shutout of the season, while Egland turned away seven shots for Massachusetts.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they host intra-state rival Yale at 7 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs.
