Storrs, Conn. (Sept. 25, 2002)-- Sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) notched two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team past Brown University in a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. With the win, the Huskies lift their record to 4-5, while Brown falls to 2-3 on the season.
Brown jumped on the board first when Cory Pelletier took a hard shot off a penalty corner and Molly Carleton deflected it past UConn goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) just under 13 minutes into the first period. UConn answered at the 23 minute mark when a scramble in front of the Brown goal turned into a penalty shot which Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) converted to knot the game at one goal apiece.
The score was tied through the intermission before Henderson tallied the unassisted game-winner at 45:59 after she dribbled through the Brown defense for a 12-yard shot. Henderson iced the game herself just five minutes later (50:09) when she used a reverse drive from eight yards out which beat Brown goalie Kathryn Noe at the far post.
UConn dominated the game outshooting the Bears, 18-4. Butler finished with two saves on the afternoon, while Noe turned away five shots for Brown.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they face the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., at 1 p.m.
