Ann Arbor, MI (Sept. 14, 2002)-- The University of Iowa scored a goal in each half to shutout the University of Connecticut field hockey team, 2-0, in first day action of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. The Huskies fall to 1-4 on the season while Iowa lifts its record to 3-2.
Iowa’s first goal was scored with just four minutes remaining in the first period when Sarah Dawson took a shot in traffic and slipped one past UConn goalie Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY). With a 1-0 lead at intermission, the Hawkeyes notched an insurance goal just four minutes into the second period as Lindsay Miller deflected a rebound off Butler’s pads and hit from four yards out.
Iowa outshot the Huskies 8-4 on the day, but UConn held the advantage, 4-2, in penalty corners.
Butler made three saves in net for the Huskies, while her Iowa counterpart, Barbara Weinberg, also stopped three Connecticut shots to preserve the shutout.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, September 15, when they continue play in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in Ann Arbor, MI, and face Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
