STORRS, CT (May 20) – Four members of the University of Connecticut golf team earned honors from the New England Division I Golf Association on Monday. Senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) was named to the All-New England First Team while classmates Kevin Coghlan (Northridge, CA) and Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) and freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) were named All-New England Honorable Mention.
The first-team distinction was the first for Vigue in his career, though he was named to the All-New England Second Team as a junior last year. The honor was the first for Coghlan, O’Connor and Murphy.
Vigue, a four-year letterwinner and co-captain this year, led the Huskies in every tournament in both the fall and spring seasons. During those 12 tournaments Vigue notched three top-three finishes, including a pair of runner-up performances at both the MacDonald Cup and the URI Newport Invitational. He fired a career-low round of 69 at the Adams Cup of Newport, one of his team-best seven rounds under par for the season. Vigue finished the year with a 73.97 scoring average and ranked atop District I in adjusted average.
Coghlan played in 11 of 12 tournaments this year and finished with an average score of 77.29. His adjusted average also ranked 32nd among District I golfers. Coghlan’s career-best round and season-best finish came at the MacDonald Cup, where an opening-round score of 72 helped propel him to a tie with Vigue for the runner-up spot. A two-year member of the UConn golf program, he played in 16 tournaments after transferring from the University of San Francisco.
As UConn’s other co-captain, O’Connor played in all 12 tournaments this year and finished with a 78.03 scoring average. His best finish of the season came at the Kauai Collegiate Cup, where back-to-back rounds of 72–the low rounds of his career–were enough to tie him for seventh place overall. In two seasons with the Huskies, O’Connor played in 24 straight tournaments after enjoying success in two seasons at Mitchell College.
In his first season of collegiate golf, Murphy was the only UConn underclassman this season to compete in all 12 tournaments. His 77.23 scoring average was second only to Vigue, and his adjusted average ranked him 29th in District I. Murphy’s best round came at the Adams Cup of Newport when he fired an opening-round 71 on his way to a tie for 13th place overall. His best finish came at the URI Newport Invitational in which he tied for ninth place.
The group helped UConn to two second-place finishes in 2001-02 and a berth in the 2002 BIG EAST Championship. The Huskies also placed fifth out of 19 teams at the New England Division I Championship and fourth out of 46 teams at the NEIGA Championship.
