Men's Track Dominates in First Home Meet

STORRS, CT -- Competing in its first home outdoor meet of the season, the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team dominated the four-team field, scoring 314 points to outdistance second-place finisher Sacred Heart, which notched 95 points. Central Connecticut State and Providence rounded out the field with 90 and 38 points, respectively.
UConn recorded victories in 15 of the 19 events. Leading the way for the Huskies was junior Mark Jellison (Reading, MA), who registered first-place performances in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.30 and the long jump with 23’10.75”.
All-American junior Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ) also posted an impressive effort in the 100-meter dash, matching the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex facility record with a time of 10.66 en route to a victory in the event.
Other first-place performances for UConn included sophomore Ernest Holloway (New London, CT) in the 200-meter dash (22.00), senior Adebo Oshodi (White Plains, NY) in the 400-meter dash (49.86), senior Dan Wilson (West Haven, CT) in the 800-meter run (1:56.04), senior Gabe DeLeon (Bronx, NY) in the 400-meter hurdles (55.53), the 4x100-meter relay team (41.94), the 4x400-meter relay team (3:27.91), junior Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) in the high jump (6’7”), sophomore Will Thomas (Wakefield, RI) in the pole vault (15’6”), freshman Ron Cook (Philadelphia, PA) in the triple jump (49’2.5”), junior Brian Hartley (Norwalk, CT) in the shot put (47’10”), sophomore John Barth (Wakefield, RI) in the hammer throw (186’8”), and sophomore Paul Pisano (Toms River, NJ) in the javelin (209’1”).
The Huskies placed 1-2-3 finishes in the 110-meter hurdles, pole vault, triple jump and hammer throw.
UConn returns to action next weekend at the Sea Ray Classic at the University of Tennessee and the Blue Devil Invitational at Central Connecticut State.
