UConn Wins First Home Meet of the Season

STORRS, CT -- Led by 12 first-place finishes in 19 events, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team claimed a team victory in its first outdoor home meet of the season at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on Friday. UConn outdistanced the field with 244 points while Rhode Island took second with 138.
Pacing the Huskies was senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI), who garnered victories in the discus throw, the hammer throw and the shot put. Nurul-Islam’s heave of 153’7” in the discus was a new personal best and shattered the previous facility record of 150’8”, set by Typhanie Bates of Connecticut in 1997.
The 4x100-meter relay team also broke a facility record en route to a first-place finish on Friday. The squad posted a time of 46.77, besting the old record of 47.23 by Massachusetts in 1997.
Other victories for UConn included sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) in the high jump (5’7”), senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) in the 200-meter dash (24.76), sophomore Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, CT) in the 400-meter dash (57.83), junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) in the 100-meter hurdles (14.35), junior Amanda Crichlow (Brooklyn, NY) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.72), the 4x400-meter relay team (4:00.89), junior Kafi Davis (Norwich, CT) in the long jump (18’8”) and freshman Caitlyn Brady (Englewood, CO) in the triple jump (38’1.5”).
Junior Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT) also posted an impressive performance for UConn in the javelin throw. Deskis’ effort of 153’4” was a new school record, breaking Cyndi DeRoehn’s six-year old record of 147’9”. Deskis finished second to Providence’s Brooke Freeburg in the event. Freeburg took first with a new facility record of 159’3”.
Deskis' throw in the javelin provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, as did Nurul-Islam's effort of 184'8" in the hammer.
In addition to the performances of Freeburg, Nurul-Islam and UConn’s 4x100-meter relay team, Providence’s Roisin McGettigan also broke a George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex record with a time of 10:46.85 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Huskies return to action next weekend at the Blue Devil Invitational at Central Connecticut State University.
