Huskies Take Third-Straight Game With Win Over LIU

Girolamo went a perfect
3-for-3 in the victory
STORRS, CT (April 3, 2002) - Junior pitcher Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) held the Blackbirds of Long Island University to just two hits and one run in the University of Connecticut softball team’s 5-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the UConn softball field. Head coach Karen Mullins also picked up her 600th career victory with the win.
The first game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to rain . The second game was canceled.
With the win, the Huskies move to 6-18 overall for their third win in two days, while the Blackbirds drop to 11-17.
UConn used a run in each the first, second and fifth innings, and two in the third to defeat LIU, who was only allowed one run off two hits in the first inning, and didn’t get another runner on base after that.
In the first, with two outs, senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) singled to right field, her first of three hits on the day, then advanced all the way around the bases when LIU’s right fielder misplayed the ball.
Junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY) started out the second inning when she was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA). A single to right field by freshman Jess Gurney (Williamstown, MA) scored Brinkworth.
A single by freshman Asleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) began the third inning for the Huskies. Girolamo followed with another single, moving Campen to second. Sophomore Maggie Arbogast reached on a fielder’s choice, which advanced Girolamo to second, but Campen was out at third. Brinkworth also reached on a fielder’s choice. Arobogast moved to second on the play, but Girolamo was out at third. D’Angelo then stepped up to the plate and singled, scoring Arbogast and advancing Brinkworth to second. Freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) brought in Brinkworth when she singled to left center.
The final Husky score of the game came in the fifth inning when Gurney drove in Brinkworth, who had hit a bunt single, off a double to left center.
Cook picked up the win, her second in as many days, to move to 5-9 on the season while allowing only two hits in 30 batters faced. LIU pitcher Crystal Eubanks fell to 7-9 overall.
Leading the Huskies at the plate was Girolamo, who had a perfect day, going 3-for-3 with one run. Gurney also helped the effort with a 2-for-3 performance, including two RBI and a double. Junior Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) also went 2-for-3.
UConn returns to BIG EAST action at noon on Saturday, April 6, as Virginia Tech comes to the UConn softball field.
