STORRS, CT (April 24, 2002) – UMass pitcher Kaila Holtz allowed only one hit and game up a perfect game in the bottom of the seventh as the Minutewomen defeated the University of Connecticut softball team, 3-0, at the UConn Softball Field for their record-setting 25th-straight win.
Last season, UMass entered its match-up with UConn sitting tied for the school record with 24-straight wins, but the Huskies upset the record win with a 2-1 victory at home. This time, they weren’t that successful.
The loss drops the Huskies to 10-30 overall, while the Minutewomen propel themselves to 40-10 on the season.
UMass tallied two runs in the third and an insurance run in the sixth to take the game.
UConn’s only hit, a single by shortstop Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) through the left side of the field, came in the first at bat of the seventh inning. Holtz was pitching a perfect game up until that point.
Husky starter Barb Cook (Jr., Conklin, NY) took the loss to fall to 7-16 on the season. Holtz moved to 17-5 with the win, while striking out six batters.
UConn returns to its own field at 3:30 p.m., tomorrow, April 25, as Quinnipiac comes to town for a doubleheader.
