Huskies finish sixth at BIG EAST Championship

NOTRE DAME, IN (April 21) – Despite its best efforts, the University of Connecticut golf team couldn’t climb out of sixth place at the 2002 BIG EAST Championship, shooting a final-round 316 at the Warren Golf Course for a score of 929 for the tournament. Virginia Tech won its second consecutive title with a score of 865.
The Hokies’ Johnson Wagner overcame a two-shot deficit and shot a final-round 68–the best round of the tournament–to take individual medalist honors with a score of 211. Notre Dame’s Steve Ratay and St. John’s Andrew Svoboda, who led going into the final day, finished tied for second with scores of 215.
UConn senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) and freshman Justin Ciombor (Plainville, MA) each finished tied for 14th place with scores of 227. Vigue fired the Huskies’ best round of the afternoon with a four-over par 75 while Ciombor slipped off his pace from the previous day to card a 78.
Freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) notched a 77 in the final round to finish with a 232, good enough for 23rd place overall. Seniors Kevin Coghlan (Northridge, CA) and Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) finished 29th and 30th, respectively. Coghlan carded an 88 in the final round while O’Connor finished with an 86.
Connecticut will next play at the University of Rhode Island Spring Invitational on April 26-27.
