NEW BRITAIN, CT (April 2, 2002) – The University of Connecticut softball team bounced back from a doubleheader loss this past weekend with a sweep of Central Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies blanked the Blue Devils, 2-0, in the first game, then took a commanding 6-1 decision in the second game.
With the wins, UConn propels its overall record to 5-18, while CCSU dropped to 5-16.
In the first game, the Huskies used a run in each the top of the first and third to take the game.
Junior Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) started out the game with a walk, then was advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC). She then moved to third on a fielder’s choice hit by senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) and was brought home off a single by sophomore Maggie Arobast (Ambler, PA).
In the third inning, Campen began things off with a double to center field, her second of the season, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Girolamo then singled to center field, scoring Campen.
Girolamo and freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) led the team with two hits each. Girolamo went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while D’Angelo went 2-for-3 with a triple, the Huskies first of the season.
Cook picked up the win for her fourth victory of the season while allowing only three hits and striking out six batters. She moved to 4-9 on the season. CCSU pitcher Jessica Cline dropped to 3-6.
In the second game, the Huskies scored one in the second, put the game away with four more in the third, then added an insurance run in the fifth.
In the second, junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY) singled to left center, then stole second. She moved to third on D’Angelo’s single to right center and was brought home off junior Bethany Watrous’ (Worcester, MA) single to the shortstop.
In UConn’s big inning, the third, Campen singled down the left field line, and moved to third off a single by Girolamo. Arbogast then doubled to left field, scoring Campen and moving Girolamo to third. Brikworth then stepped up to the plate and tallied her second hit in as many at bats, bringing Girolamo in and moving Arobogast to third. The final two Husky runs of the inning were scored on an error by CCSU center fielder Michele Cartier.
For their final run of the game, Girolamo started off the fifth with a double to left field. Freshman Patty Lowe (Stamford, CT) then came in to pinch run for her and scored off an Arbogast single.
Three different Huskies tallied two hits a piece in the victory. Girolamo went 2-for-4 with a run and a double. Arbogast went 2-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a double, and Brinkworth went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Junior pitcher Claire Hesson picked up her first win of the season after pitching five innings, allowing only five hits and striking out four to move to 1-8 on the season. Senior Caryn Haskins (East Freetown, MA) came in at relief for Hesson and pitched two innings with one strikeout in seven batters faced.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, April 3, with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against Long Island University at the UConn softball field.
