Huskies Win Second Home Meet of Outdoor Season

STORRS, CT (April 19, 2002) -- Paced by 13 victories in 20 events, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team won its second home meet of the season, outdistancing Brown, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut State with 229 points. Brown finished second with 150 points while UMass was third with 103 points. URI and SCSU rounded out the field with 84 and 44 points, respectively.
The Huskies notched five 1-2 finishes on the day, including impressive efforts by junior Andrea Gourdine (Penfield, NY) and freshman Caitlyn Brady (Englewood, CO) in the triple jump. Gourdine took first with a jump of 12.17 meters (39’11.25”) while Brady was second with an effort of 11.75 meters (38’6.75”).
Senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) and junior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, CT) joined Gourdine and Brady as Huskies with 1-2 finishes in field events, as the duo claimed the top two spots in the shot put with Nurul-Islam garnering the victory. She also took home first place in the hammer throw while Parkosewich won the discus throw with an impressive effort of 46.27 meters (151’10”).
In the track events, junior Antonia Cadore (St. John’s, Grenada) and freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) finished 1-2 in the 100-meter dash. Garner was part of another 1-2 finish in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing behind teammate junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT), who claimed first in the event with a time of 14.52. Senior Lauren Dunning (Toms River, NJ) and freshman Julie LaFrano (Loudonville, NY) also went 1-2 in the 10,000-meter run.
Other victories for UConn included senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) in the 200-meters (24.56), junior Amanda Crichlow (Brooklyn, NY) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.17), junior Kelly Joy (Montpelier, VT) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:33.10), the 4x100-meter relay team with a George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex facility record time of 45.90, the 4x400-meter relay team (3:52.97) and sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) in the high jump (1.71 meters - 5’7.25”).
The Huskies return to action next week at the Penn Relays, held April 25-27 in Philadelphia, PA.
