KNOXVILLE, TN (April 13, 2002) -- A victory in the 1,500-meter run by senior Dan Wilson (West Haven, CT) highlighted a number of impressive performances by the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team Friday and Saturday at the prestigious Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. No team scores were kept.
Wilson ran to a first-place finish with a time of 3:44.07, an NCAA provisionally qualifying time. Wilson joins sophomore Will Thomas (Wakefield, RI), who won the Scott Hartman Decathlon at the Sea Ray Relays on Thursday, as an NCAA qualifier for UConn in the outdoor season. Thomas’ 7,571 points in the decathlon were an NCAA automatic qualifier and broke the school record.
Although Wilson and Thomas recorded UConn’s only victories during the meet, several other Huskies posted noteworthy performances. Sophomore Paul Pisano (Toms River, NJ) placed fifth in the javelin invitational with an effort of 207’11”. Sophomore John Barth (Wakefield, RI) took sixth-place in the open hammer throw with 184’7” while senior Elliott Blount (Freeport, NY) in the 800-meter run, junior Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) in the high jump and junior Ken Goglas (Randolph, NJ) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase each notched eighth-place finishes in their respective events.
In relay action, the distance medley team came in third place with a time 9:51.16 while the 4x400-meter relay team took 10th-place with a new school record time of 3:10.24, eclipsing the previous record time of 3:10.72, set in 2000.
While the majority of the team was competing in Knoxville, a number of Huskies were in action at the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational on Saturday. Headlining the Husky performances at CCSU was sophomore Eric Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY), who took first-place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.72.
The Huskies’ next competition is Saturday, April 20, in a home meet with UMass and Brown.
