FAYETTEVILLE, AR (Mar. 9, 2002) -- University of Connecticut men’s track and field senior Dan Wilson (West Haven, CT) placed eighth with a time of 4:07.83 in the finals of the mile Saturday evening at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by the University of Arkansas. With the top eight finish, Wilson garnered All-America accolades.
The All-America honors are the fourth of Wilson’s career, as he has earned All-America status twice in cross country in 2000 and 2001 and was also a member of UConn’s indoor distance medley relay team which took home fourth-place and All-America accolades in 2000. He is the third athlete in UConn men’s track and field history to earn All-America honors four times
Christian Goy of Illinois State won the event with a time of 4:00.06 .
Although he placed 15th with a time of 1:08.41 in preliminary action yesterday and initially missed the final cut of 10 competitors, Wilson was awarded a spot in the finals by a decision of the NCAA Games Committee, which ruled that Wilson suffered incidental contact which obstructed his run during his preliminary heat yesterday evening.
Wilson was named NCAA Northeast Regional Athlete of the Year while UConn head coach Greg Roy was awarded with NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year honors.
Wilson’s run in the indoor mile final at the NCAA Championship concludes the indoor portion of UConn’s schedule. The outdoor season begins for the Huskies on Mar. 23, when they will compete at the Florida International Invitational.
