MIAMI, FL (March 1, 2002) – Errors and tough pitching cost the University of Connecticut softball team its first two games of the Golden Panther Invitational Friday morning. The Huskies fell to Wichita State, 2-1, in the first game, and No. 20 Florida Atlantic, 5-0, in the second.
The losses drop UConn to 1-6 on the young season.
Against the Shockers, seven errors, including four in the second, gave WSU a 2-0 lead after the top of the second. The Huskies responded in the bottom of the third with one run when junior Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA), who got on base with her first hit of the season, a single up the middle, scored from first base off a double to center field by junior Barb Cook (Conklin, NY).
UConn out-hit WSU, six to four, and both Shocker runs were unearned, but the Huskies couldn’t find a solution to their error problem.
Freshman Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) led at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. Cook picked up the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season.
In the second game, tough pitching by FAU pitcher Nichole Myers left UConn searching for hits. Cook stepped up big again, tallying UConn’s only hits for the game on a 2-for-3 effort.
Junior Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took the loss, dropping to 0-3.
The Huskies continue action tomorrow in the tournament with a 9 a.m. game against No. 7 Oklahoma and a 3 p.m. game against host Florida International.
