COLUMBUS, GA – A pair of runs in the fourth would be all Missouri would need in order to hand the University of Connecticut softball team a 2-0 loss on Sunday morning in what was the Huskies final appearance in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA.
With the decision, the Huskies slid to 1-4 on the year with the weekend’s games serving as the opening contest of the 2002 season. Missouri improved its record to 5-8.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth before a Rachael McGinnis triple down the right field line scored Heather Allister. McGinnis would reach home on an error by Connecticut’s Bethany Watrous.
Barbara Cook pitched a complete game for UConn allowing four hits, two runs, one earned, while walking one and striking out four. Her record now stands at 1-2. Ingrid Werner picked up the win (3-2) as she pitched four and two thirds in giving up only three hits and three walks.
Connecticut is back in action March 1-3 as the Huskies travel to Miami, FL, for the FIU Golden Panther Invitational.
