NIAGARA, NY (February 23) – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team was shutout by Niagara University, 5-0, in an ECAC Eastern match-up on Saturday afternoon in upstate New York. UConn, which dropped its fourth straight game, fell to 11-18-2 overall, 7-11-1 in the league.
Niagara’s Jennifer Goulet notched the game-winner early in the first period to put the Purple Eagles on the board and Lindsay Vine scored a power play goal at the 13:03 mark to give Niagara the 2-0 lead heading into the middle period. UConn and Niagara both had eight shots on goal. Connecticut held Niagara scoreless in the second period, and then the Purple Eagles went on to score three unanswered goals in the third stanza, en route to the shutout. Candice Ceelen scored three-minutes into the period, followed by an Amanda Reid tally minutes (5:47) later. Melissa Hamilton capped off the day’s scoring at the 13:11 mark.
Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) suffered the loss in goal for UConn, making 23 saves. Tania Pinelli stopped all 17 of Connecticut’s shots.
Connecticut will play its last regular season road game against Cornell on Sunday at 2:00 pm in Ithaca, NY.
