BOSTON, MA (November 26) – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team was shut down by No. 2 nationally ranked Harvard University, 5-1, at Bright Hockey Center in Boston, MA on Tuesday evening. The loss dropped the Huskies to 5-7-0 overall, while Harvard improved to 6-1-0.
UConn held Harvard to only one goal in the first period on a power play shot from Jennifer Raimondi, but the Huskies were out shot 16-2. In the second period the score remained tight ending in a 2-0 Crimson lead. National team player Julie Chu notched her first of two goals on the evening at the 2:58 mark of the period during a 5x3 situation. After two periods, UConn was out shot 42-9.
The third period, Harvard widened the scoring gap by scoring three unanswered goals in the first ten-minutes. Nicole Corriero scored just nine-seconds in, followed by a Jennifer Botterill score at the 2:35 mark. Chu scored her final goal at 10:38 of the period with an assist from national team player Angela Ruggiero, a short-handed tally. UConn’s only goal was during a power play at the 10:55 mark. Megan McLeod (Livonia,MI) finished on a pass from Jacquelyn McGuire (Glenview, IL) to end the game’s scoring.
Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) suffered the loss in net stopping 47 shots on goal, a new career high, while Canadian National Team goalie Jessica Ruddock was forced to stop only 14 shots. Harvard out shot UConn 52-13.
UConn will play host to Cornell on Saturday, November 30 at 2:00 pm at the UConn Ice Arena.
