STORRS, CT (Oct. 8) - The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team was chosen to finish fourth in the first Hockey East Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Last year’s ECAC Champion, Providence College, was chosen to place first with four first-place votes. Northeastern and New Hampshire claimed the second and third place spots, earning one first-place vote each. UConn was voted fourth as Maine and Boston College rounded out the six teams.
Last season, the Huskies completed their second year as a Division I squad and first as part of the ECAC Eastern League. UConn, which earned it first-ever postseason berth, fell to New Hampshire, 4-1, in a quarterfinal game of the ECAC Eastern League Championship on March 9. UConn ended the season with a record of 11-21-3 overall, 7-12-3 in the ECAC.
Freshmen Kim Berry (Haverhill, MA), Caitlin Salazer-Reid (London, Ontario) and Laura Stosky (Edmonton, Alberta) were all named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team. The awards mark the first-ever postseason accolades in the UConn women’s ice hockey program history. Berry was also named to the ECAC Honorable Mention Team.
The Huskies begin their season with a road-trip to Mercyhurst College. They face the Lakers on Saturday and Sunday, October 12 and 13. Both games start at 2 p.m.
