Huskies Shutout Rutgers

Storrs, CT (Oct. 19, 2002)-- Sophomore Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) notched two goals to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a 5-0 shutout over Rutgers University on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. With the win, UConn lifts its record to 9-6 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST play while Rutgers falls to 2-13 and 0-4 in the league.
UConn’s first goal came off a penalty stroke converted by senior Kelly Cochrane (Scarsdale, NY) at 30:14 in the first period to give UConn a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Huskies iced the game in the second period scoring four goals led by Henderson who tallied two consecutive goals just two minutes apart. Sophomore Jennifer Lozito (Fairfield, NJ) had UConn’s fourth goal at 62:45 and junior Leigh Morrissette (Granby, CT) finished the scoring off an assist from freshman Lindsay Belli (Glenwood, NJ) at 81:50.
UConn outshot Rutgers, 22-1, and held a 15-0 advantage in penalty corners. Connecticut goalie junior Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) made just one save while recording her fifth shutout of the year and Rutgers goalie Stacy Gaenzle stopped 12 UConn shots.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, when they face Boston University at 4 p.m. The game will be played at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass.
