STORRS, CT. (Oct. 19) – Behind three first period goals, the Badgers of Wisconsin shut out the University of Connecticut’s women’s ice hockey team, 6-0 at the UConn Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Steph Millar scored the game-winner at 9:28 in the first period from the front of the net. The goal was assisted by Kerry Weiland and Meghan Hunter. Sharon Cole scored less than seven minutes later from just inside the right circle from Kathryn Greaves. Millar added her second of the game during a scrum in front of goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) from Hunter and Kendra Antony. The goal sent the teams into the first intermission with a 3-0 score in favor of the Badgers.
Neither team was able to find the net in period two, as the Huskies out-shot their opponent 10-8, a better effort than first period, when the Badgers had 15 shots to UConn’s five.
The third period once again was in the hands of Wisconsin, as they doubled their lead with three different players scoring. Antony added a goal from Millar and Hunter. Defenseman Nicole Uliasz took a high shot from the top of the offensive circle to put the fifth goal on the board. The final score came at the 13:15 mark from Michelle Sikich when she poked in the puck during a tangle in front of the net.
UConn goaltender Shain stopped 24 for the Huskies in her first collegiate start and Shannon Murphy finished the game, turning away five. Jackie MacMillan saved 20 in the Badger win.
The Huskies dropped the first in a pair of games and will meet the Badgers again on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
