ERIE, PA. (Oct. 13) - A pair of first period goals by Mercyhurst College put the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team in too big a hole to escape as the Lakers topped the Huskies, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The loss drops UConn to 0-2 on the year while Mercyhurst improves to 4-0.
Mercyhurst scored a pair of goals just 33 seconds apart in the early going to take a 2-0 lead. Jennifer Jeffrey tallied at 8:07 on the power play while Tracy Logan struck on the following shift for the Lakers. UConn cut its deficit in half in the second period when Sara Mahoney (Lynn, MA) scored her first of the year from Laura Stosky (Edmonton, Alberta) and Megan McLeod (Livonia, MI) on a two-man advantage at 7:58. The Huskies appeared to have tied the game a few minutes later but referee Pete Feola blew the play dead after losing sight of the puck moments before it crossed the goal line. The Lakers took momentum into the locker room, though, as a late goal gave them a 3-1 edge when Randi Pilger found the net through a screen with two seconds showing on the clock.
UConn cut the Mercyhurst lead to one goal when Caitlin Salazer-Reid (London, Ontario) scored from McLeod at the 16:31 mark of the third period but an empty-netter at 19:57 would seal the Laker win.
The Huskies return to Storrs to face Wisconsin in their home opener on October 19 at 2:00 p.m.
